Xpeng delivers 8,250 cars in Jan, down 59% from Dec

The decline was mainly due to seasonal factors. The X9 MPV, which went on sale on January 1, delivered 2,478 units in January.

Xpeng‘s (NYSE: XPEV) deliveries in January were down significantly from December, hurt by seasonal factors like its major local peers.

The electric vehicle (EV) maker delivered 8,250 vehicles in January, up 58.11 percent year-on-year but down 58.99 percent from December, according to data it released today.

Xpeng saw a significant uptick in deliveries in the fourth quarter of last year, with more than 20,000 units delivered each month.

However, January, and the month in which the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday falls, are usually low points for auto sales in China, as demand for cars is usually released at the end of the previous year and the population rests for the holiday.

The Chinese New Year holiday in 2024 is from February 10 to February 17. Last year the holiday was January 21-27, 2023.

It is also worth noting that Xpeng announced on January 26 that it initiated an upgrade of its Zhaoqing plant in Guangdong province, which will last for about 20 days, with overall production line commissioning completed by the end of February.

The upgrade is aimed at preparing for the launch of a new model and boosting plant capacity, Xpeng said previously.

The plant, which is Xpeng’s first, is located in Zhaoqing Hi-Tech Zone and went into production in May 2020. It has another plant in Guangzhou, where it is headquartered.

Xpeng’s X9 MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) delivered 2,478 units in January, with orders for Max trim accounting for about 70 percent of total X9 orders, it said today.

The X9 was unveiled on the first day of the Guangzhou auto show on November 17, 2023 and began pre-sales, and was officially launched on January 1. On January 16, Xpeng said deliveries of the model began.

The X9 has showcased outstanding product competitiveness and cutting-edge smart technology to meet family needs, it said, adding that the company is currently ramping up the X9’s production capacity and accelerating deliveries to customers.

Xpeng’s ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) technology offers an attractive value proposition to customers, it said, adding that XNGP is now fully accessible to users across 243 cities nationwide.

XNGP ADAS monthly active user penetration has exceeded 85 percent, and ranks first in the industry in terms of city ADAS active user size, user experience, and mileage penetration, Xpeng said.

Xpeng’s goal is to expand end-to-end XNGP coverage to major urban road networks, parking spaces and private roads nationwide by 2024.

In addition, Xpeng plans to launch research and development of highway NGP for overseas markets this year and XNGP in 2025, it said, repeating a statement made by He Xiaopeng, the company’s chairman and CEO, last month.
