Tesla’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) retail sales in China fell on a year-on-year basis last month, after data earlier this month showed a decrease in sales of cars produced at its Shanghai factory.
Tesla China sold 58,459 vehicles in April, including 29,728 for export, data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed.
That means the US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 28,731 vehicles in China’s domestic market in April, down 8.56 percent from 31,421 a year earlier and down 61.24 percent from 74,127 in March, CnEVPost’s calculations show.
Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.
Tesla’s pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, it previously said.
The Shanghai plant’s exports in April were down 3.31 percent from 30,746 in the same month a year ago, while up 532.38 percent from 4,701 in March.
Tesla China’s overall sales including exports in April were down 5.96 percent from 62,167 a year ago and down 25.84 percent from 78,828 in March.
Including exports, Tesla China’s wholesale sales of Model Y in April were 33,960 units, up 6.25 percent from 31,962 units in the same month last year, but down 30.73 percent from 49,029 units in March.
Wholesale sales of the Model 3, including exports, were 24,499 units, down 18.89 percent from 30,205 a year earlier and down 17.79 percent from 29,799 in March.
China’s retail sales of passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) in April were 905,000 units, up 33.98 percent year-on-year but down 8.68 percent from March, according to CPCA.
Retail sales of BEVs in April were 559,000 units, up 37.96 percent year-on-year but down 13.47 percent from March.
This means that Tesla contributed 3.17 percent of China’s passenger NEV retail sales in April, down from 7.48 percent in March.
