SAIC Motor’s MG brand has begun accepting customer reservations in China for its electric roadster Cyberster, which entered a regulatory filing catalog in April.

MG announced yesterday that the Cyberster is officially available for pre-sale, offering three versions, but did not announce a pre-sale price range.

Those interested can pay RMB 10,000 ($1,370) to pre-order the model, which entitles them to benefits including priority delivery and a package worth RMB 20,000 yuan.

The three versions of the MG Cyberster include two single-motor versions and one dual-motor version that can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in as fast as 3.2 seconds. One of the single-motor versions of the model has a CLTC range of up to 580 kilometers.

The two-seater electric sports car is based on the MG cyber cube platform and measures 4,535 mm in length, 1,913 mm in width, 1,329 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,690 mm.

MG hasn’t announced when the model will go on sale, but several local media outlets said it’s expected to be in the fourth quarter, and the model is set to be exported to overseas markets, including the UK, in 2024.

MG, short for Morris Garages, is a vehicle brand owned by Shanghai-based SAIC.

The MG Cyberster first appeared in the public eye on April 19, 2021, the first day of the Shanghai auto show two years ago.

MG conducted a crowdfunding campaign for the roadster at the time, confirming that the model would be mass-produced after the crowdfunding amount reached RMB 50 million.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released a catalog of models that will be allowed to be sold for public comment on April 11, and the MG Cyberster was included.

Both single-motor versions of the model are powered by rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors, with the low-power version having a peak motor power of 231 kW each and the other having a peak motor power of 250 kW, according to the filing.

Its dual-motor version is equipped with two permanent magnet synchronous motors with peak powers of 150 kW and 250 kW, respectively, and supports a top speed of 200 km/h.

The car’s power batteries are all ternary lithium-ion batteries, supplied by a joint venture between SAIC and CATL.

    ($1 = RMB 7.3113)
