CATL and BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) both saw their shares of the global electric vehicle (EV) battery market decline slightly in January-September from January-August, while the shares of the other battery makers remained mostly stable.

In the January-September period, global EV battery consumption totaled 485.9 GWh, up 44.4 percent from 336.6 GWh in the same period a year ago, according to data released on November 7 by South Korean market researcher SNE Research.

CATL’s battery installations from January to September amounted to 178.9 GWh, up 52.1 percent from 117.6 GWh in the same period last year.

The Chinese power battery giant continued to rank first in the world with a 36.8 percent share, and remains the only battery supplier in the world with a market share of more than 30 percent.

That was up from its 35 percent share in the same period last year and down from its 36.9 percent share in the January-August period.

BYD installed 76.6 GWh of power batteries in the January-September period, up 71.4 percent from 44.7 GWh in the same period last year.

The company ranked second in the January-September period with a 15.8 percent share, up from 13.3 percent in the same period last year and down from 15.9 percent in the January-August period.

South Korea’s LG Energy Solution had a 49.1 percent year-on-year increase in installed power battery volume to 69.3 GWh in the January-September period.

The South Korean company ranked third in the world with a 14.3 percent share, higher than the 13.8 percent recorded in the same period last year and up from 14.2 percent in the January-August period.

Japan’s Panasonic was fourth with a 7 percent share, South Korea’s SK On was fifth with a 5.1 percent share, and China’s CALB was sixth with a 4.6 percent share.

South Korea’s Samsung SDI, China’s Gotion High-tech, Eve Energy, and Sunwoda ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively, with shares of 4.5 percent, 2.2 percent, 2.1 percent, and 1.4 percent from January to September.

Notably, Gotion High-tech replaced Eve Energy as the No. 8 battery manufacturer in the January-September rankings.

Gotion had 9.1 GWh of batteries installed in January-August, placing it at No. 9 with a 2.1 percent share in the rankings published by SNE Research last month.

Eve Energy had 9.2 GWh of batteries installed in January-August, placing it No. 8 in the rankings last month.

China EV battery installations in Sept: CATL’s share falls to 39.41%, BYD rises to 27%
