    China NEV retail up 34% year-on-year to 905,000 in Apr

    • Retail sales of China’s passenger NEVs saw year-on-year growth last month, despite a decline from March.
    • Retail penetration of NEVs was 51.5 percent in April, above 50 percent for the second consecutive month.

    China’s passenger new energy-vehicle (NEV) retail sales saw year-on-year growth last month, despite a decline from March.

    Retail sales of passenger NEVs in April totaled 905,000 units, up 33.9 percent year-on-year but down 8.7 percent from March, data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed.

    The figure is lower than the preliminary figure of 922,000 released by the CPCA earlier this month, but higher than the estimated figure of 900,000 units it released at the end of last month.

    Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) had retail sales of 559,000 units in April, up 38 percent from a year earlier but down 13.5 percent from March.

    BEVs contributed 61.8 percent of all NEV retail sales in April, down from 65.2 percent in March.

    Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), excluding extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), contributed 28.7 percent of all NEV retail sales in April at 260,000 units. That’s up 25.6 percent year-on-year, but down 3 percent from March.

    EREVs contributed 9.5 percent of NEV retail sales to 86,000 units sold in April, up 32.3 percent year-on-year and up 11.7 percent from March.

    Combined retail sales of PHEVs and EREVs were 346,000 in April, up 27.3 percent year-on-year and up 0.3 percent from March.

    China’s passenger cars, including sedans, SUVs and MPVs, retailed 1,755,000 units in April, up 14.5 percent year-on-year but down 9.4 percent from March.

    China’s NEV penetration at retail stood at 51.5 percent in April, up 7 percentage points from a year earlier and up 0.4 percentage points from March.

    The retail penetration rate of NEVs from local brands was 72.8 percent in April, compared to 23.5 percent for luxury brands and 6.8 percent for mainstream JV brands, according to CPCA.

    China’s wholesale sales of passenger NEVs in April were 1.133 million units, up 40.2 percent year-on-year and up 0.3 percent from March.

    The penetration rate of NEVs in wholesale in April was a record high of 51.7 percent, up 11 percentage points year-on-year and up 4.9 percentage points from March.

    The penetration rate of NEVs in April was 66 percent for local Chinese brands, 38 percent for luxury brands and 7 percent for mainstream joint venture brands.

    Passenger NEVs exported from China amounted to 189,000 units in April, up 44.2 percent year-on-year and up 31.6 percent from March, contributing 44.6 percent of passenger car exports.

    BEVs contributed 65 percent of NEV exports in April, down from 81 percent a year earlier.

    Exports of A0- and A00-class BEVs accounted for 33 percent of NEV exports, flat from a year ago.


    China EV insurance registrations for week ending May 4: Nio 3,470, Tesla 7,290, BYD 59,310

    Nio Inc had 5,100 insurance registrations in China last week, including 3,470 under the Nio brand, 1,280 for Onvo and 350 for Firefly.
