BYD saw another record month of new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in October, its battery electric vehicle (BEV) models grew strongly.

The NEV giant saw continued growth in overseas sales and a record number of batteries installed last month.

BYD sold 301,833 NEVs in October, the first time it has surpassed the 300,000-unit mark and the sixth consecutive month of record highs, data released by the company today showed.

That’s a 38.57 percent year-on-year increase, up 5 percent from September, and the ninth sequential increase.

The company stopped production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to focus on producing plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and BEVs.

BYD’s NEVs include passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles, with sales of passenger NEVs exceeding the 300,000-unit mark for the first time in October at a record 301,095 units.

That’s up 38.42 percent from 217,518 units in the same month last year, and up 4.95 percent from 286,903 units in September.

BYD’s commercial NEVs sold 738 units in October, up 147.65 percent from 298 units in the same month last year and up 33.94 percent from 551 units in September.

Among passenger NEVs, BEVs sold 165,505 units in October, up 60.44 percent from 103,157 units in the same month last year and up 9.47 percent from 151,193 units in September.

BYD’s sales of passenger PHEVs in October were 135,590 units, an increase of 18.56 percent from 114,361 units in the same month last year and a decrease of 0.09 percent from 135,710 units in September.

In October, BYD sold a record 30,521 NEVs in overseas markets, up 220.3 percent from 9,529 in the same month last year and up 8.85 percent from 28,039 in September.

The company first announced its overseas sales figures for NEVs in July 2022.

In addition to being China’s largest NEV company, BYD is also China’s second-largest power battery maker.

BYD’s installed capacity of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 15.286 GWh in October, up 50.04 percent from 10.188 GWh in the same month last year and up 6.54 percent from 14.348 GWh in September.

In the January-October period, BYD sold 2,381,471 NEVs, up 70.36 percent year-on-year.

BYD aims to sell at least 3 million vehicles this year and strives to reach 3.6 million, the company’s chairman and president Wang Chuanfu said in late March.

That means BYD will have to sell about 310,000 NEVs in each of the next two months to reach its target.

BYD sold 2,371,350 passenger NEVs in the January-October period, up 70.25 percent year-on-year.

It sold 10,121 commercial NEVs in January-October, up 101.17 percent year-on-year.

BYD sold 1,213,918 passenger BEVs in January-October, up 77.14 percent year-on-year.

It sold 1,157,432 passenger PHEVs in January-October, up 63.58 percent year-on-year.

BYD’s overseas NEV sales in January-October were 176,041 units, up 919.64 percent year-on-year.

In January-October, BYD’s installed base of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 116.218 GWh, up 71.72 percent year-on-year.

BYD starts offering limited-time discounts on several models to boost sales
