BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) saw record high new energy vehicle (NEV) sales last month, as it continues to solidify its position as China’s largest NEV maker.

Strong September sales put BYD at a record high for NEV sales in the third quarter as well, and took year-to-date sales to over 2 million units, closer to its 3 million target.

BYD also posted record sales in overseas markets in September, as it continues to advance its internationalization strategy.

BYD sold 287,454 NEVs in September, up 42.83 percent year-on-year and up 4.76 percent from August, its eighth consecutive sequential increase, according to a Hong Kong Stock Exchange announcement today.

The company ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to focus on producing plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

BYD’s NEVs include passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles, with sales of passenger NEVs at 286,903 units in September, up 42.76 percent from 200,973 units a year earlier and up 4.68 percent from 274,086 units in August.

BYD’s commercial NEVs sold 511 units in September, up 92.66 percent from 286 units in the same month last year and up 83.67 percent from 300 units in August.

Among passenger NEVs, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sold 151,193 units in September, up 59.25 percent from 94,941 units in the same month last year and up 3.82 percent from 145,627 units in August.

BYD’s sales of passenger plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) in September were 135,710 units, up 27.99 percent from 106,032 units in the same month last year and up 5.64 percent from 128,459 units in August.

In September, BYD sold a record 28,039 NEVs in overseas markets, up 12.05 percent from 25,023 in August.

The company first announced its overseas sales figures for NEVs in 2022 in July.

In addition to being China’s largest NEV company, BYD is also China’s second-largest power battery maker.

BYD’s installed base of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 14.348 GWh in September, up 66.64 percent from 8.610 GWh in the same month last year, and up 3.02 percent from 13.928 GWh in August.

In the third quarter, BYD sold 824,001 NEVs, an increase of 52.96 percent year-on-year and up 17.12 percent from the second quarter.

BYD’s passenger NEVs sold 822,094 units in the third quarter, up 53.04 percent year-on-year and up 17.4 percent from the second quarter.

The company sold 1,907 commercial NEVs in the third quarter, up 23.83 percent year-on-year but down 42.51 percent from the second quarter.

BYD’s passenger BEVs sold 431,603 in the third quarter, up 66.89 percent year-on-year and up 22.56 percent from the second quarter.

Its passenger PHEVs sold 390,491 units in the third quarter, up 40.19 percent year-on-year and up 12.18 percent from the second quarter.

BYD sold 71,231 NEVs overseas in the third quarter, up 100.28 percent from the second quarter.

BYD’s installed base of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 40.682 GWh in the third quarter, an increase of 73.48 percent year-on-year and up 22.32 percent from the second quarter.

In the January-September period, BYD sold 2,079,638 NEVs, surpassing the 2-million-unit mark, up 76.23 percent year-on-year.

BYD aims to sell at least 3 million vehicles this year and strives to reach 3.6 million, the company’s chairman and president Wang Chuanfu said in late March.

That means BYD will have to sell at least 307,000 NEVs each month in the fourth quarter to reach its target.

BYD sold 2,070,255 passenger NEVs in the January-September period, up 76.14 percent year-on-year.

BYD’s overseas NEV sales in January-September were 145,520 units, up nearly 18 times year-on-year.

In January-September, BYD’s installed base of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 100.932 GWh, up 75.56 percent year-on-year.
