BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has introduced two new models in Cambodia to expand its product lineup in the Southeast Asian market.
BYD Cambodia rolled out the BYD Seal 5 Super Hybrid and BYD M9 Super Hybrid at an event in the capital Phnom Penh on October 12, according to a statement released today.
The M9 is BYD’s Xia MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). The Seal 5 in Europe corresponds to China’s Seal 05 DM-i, while in other markets including Thailand it corresponds to China’s Chaser 05.
BYD’s announcement did not specify the corresponding Chinese models for these two vehicles.
Since entering Cambodia, BYD has steadily expanded its operations. To date, it operates seven sales showrooms and one after-sales service center in Phnom Penh.
The company expects to increase its sales showrooms in Cambodia to 13 and after-sales service centers to six by year-end.
As of September 30, BYD’s vehicle deliveries in Cambodia this year reached 2,990 units, marking a 497 percent year-on-year increase.
The company said that its passenger vehicle factory in Sihanoukville is in its final stages of construction and will soon commence official production.
It added that in the future, the main models sold by BYD in Cambodia will be locally assembled.
The BYD plant is a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) vehicle assembly facility located in the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, with its groundbreaking ceremony held in April this year.
Spanning 12 hectares, the project involves a total investment of $32 million.
Construction was expected to be completed in October, with the first batch of BYD EVs assembled in Cambodia to be rolled off the production line in early November, according to a late April report by Cambodian English-language media outlet The Phnom Penh Post.
BYD plans to expand its showrooms in Cambodia to 13 by year-end.
