Lordstown Motors could be in financial trouble. Hyundai’s supplier shows off its e-Corner EV tech with a crab walk and pivot turn. And is a growing group of U.S. shoppers rejecting EVs? This and more, here at Green Car Reports. In its latest survey data, J.D. Power saw a higher portion of shoppers indicating they were “very unlikely” to consider an EV purchase in the next 12 months than ever before—indicating a growing portion of shoppers may be flat-out rejecting EVs. Although it’s unclear what new factors contributed to that, price and charging were familiar foes. On Monday, Lordstown Motors…
Hyundai’s affiliate technology supplier, Hyundai Mobis, has shown its e-Corner modular steering and propulsion system for EVs in real-world testing, and it’s just released a bit more about what the system will allow dynamically. Put simply, it could dramatically change the maneuverability of electrified urban vehicles, driven or not. The company already gained attention earlier this year with the system showcased on an Ioniq 5. With steering, braking, and propulsion consolidated into modular units that can be installed at all four corners of a vehicle, it potentially allows a new type of skateboard platform with even more packaging freedom, as…
Despite strong EV sales growth, the ratio of U.S. car shoppers uninterested in buying an EV is increasing, according to a new J.D. Power survey. “Top-line metrics on overall EV market share, availability and affordability have been on a long-term upward trend,” J.D. Power said in a statement, “but beneath those headline numbers we are starting to see some consumer behaviors that suggest a possible bifurcation of the automotive marketplace.” J.D. Power’s data show the number of shoppers “very unlikely” to consider an EV purchase in the next 12 months reached 21% in March. That’s up 2% from the month…
Lordstown Motors on Monday warned that Taiwan’s Foxconn may be looking to back out of a crucial funding deal that would keep the electric truck maker running—and that it might go bankrupt if the issue isn’t resolved. In a regulatory filing first reported by CNBC, Lordstown said it received a letter from Foxconn on April 21 alleging that the would-be truckmaker was in breach of a funding deal because its stock had fallen under $1 per share for 30 consecutive trading days, triggering a delisting notice from NASDAQ (shares were trading at 30 cents on Monday). Lordstown reported that the…

The 2023 Honda Accord lineup—including the Accord Hybrid—has achieved top crash-test results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the agency revealed on Friday. Improved side-impact protection, part of the redesign the Accord lineup received for 2023, is partly to credit for the top showing. It now achieves a “Good” rating in the updated side test, versus a “Marginal” rating for the outgoing 2022 models, giving it a spot on the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ honor roll. The IIHS confirmed to Green Car Reports that it doesn’t distinguish hybrids in its current ratings, so results announced last week for…
Daimler Truck North America announced a $650 million joint venture to develop charging and hydrogen-fueling infrastructure for medium-duty and heavy-duty commercial trucks. Called Greenlane, the joint venture was started in 2022 by Daimler, utility NextEra Energy Resources, and investment firm BlackRock Alternatives. It plans to add charging stations and hydrogen stations along “various freight routes,” along the coasts and in Texas, starting with a Southern California site, according to a Daimler press release. The exact location and opening date will be revealed at a later time, but it may be no coincidence that the company announced this intent to “forge…
An electric sedan prototype developed by failed Saab savior NEVS, showcasing in-wheel motors, has surfaced in the wake of the company’s shutdown. NEVS bought the remains of Saab after the Swedish automaker went bankrupt in 2011. It once planned to launch a series of four electric vehicles for China, all built on the Phoenix platform that was going to underpin the next-generation Saab 9-3, plus an electric version of the existing 9-3 using that model’s legacy General Motors platform. The latter, along with a model based on the old Saab 9-3X, was shown in 2017. The car just revealed, a…
