Despite professed support for EVs, many automakers are quietly fighting proposed EPA emissions rules that would require expanded EV sales, according to the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The EPA this spring proposed tailpipe emissions rules for 2027-2032, setting a goal of reducing emissions by about 56% in 2032 compared to 2026 levels. To do that, the agency estimates automakers will need to sell a lot more EVs. Current rules can be met with about 17% EVs by 2026, while the new rules may nudge the percentage of EVs up to 67%, it projected. But they don’t mandate EVs. 2024…
Following the preview of its future lineup on August 3, Fisker has released more information and photos of the Pear, its upcoming entry-level model. The company also announced that a production-intent Fisker Pear will be on public display at the Fisker Lounge Munich on September 4-10, concurrent with the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich. Priced at $29,900 before incentives, the Pear takes the shape of a crossover and features seating for five or six in a body that’s 179.1 inches (4,550 millimeters) long. This makes it smaller than the Fisker Ocean SUV but roomy for its segment nevertheless. The five-seat…
EVs—particularly Teslas—are stolen less than internal-combustion cars, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI). The HLDI published its annual list of most-stolen and least-stolen vehicles Thursday, based on the frequency of insurance claims for whole vehicle theft for 2020-2022 models. The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y had the lowest frequency of claims, with the Model X, Model S, and Nissan Leaf also having much lower frequencies of theft claims than the industry average, relative to vehicle population. That makes for six EVs (the HLDI counts the single-motor and dual-motor Model 3 separately)…
HiPhi previewed the price hike earlier this month, saying it was because the two long-range versions accounted for a larger-than-expected share of orders. (Image credit: CnEVPost) Chinese premium electric vehicle (EV) maker Human Horizons’ HiPhi brand has raised the starting prices of two long-range versions of its HiPhi Y SUV by 10,000 yuan ($1,370), after teasing the planned price hike earlier this month. HiPhi launched the HiPhi Y, its third model after the ultra-luxurious HiPhi X and HiPhi Z, on July 15, with deliveries starting on July 29. There are four variants of the HiPhi Y available, previously starting at…
Hyundai on Wednesday provided more details on the mid-cycle refresh of its Sonata mid-size sedan—including the Sonata Hybrid—for the 2024 model year. As previewed by Hyundai in March, the refresh takes the current-generation Sonata, which arrived in early 2020 in Sonata Hybrid guise, in a different styling direction from the already-dramatic version that’s been in showrooms for the past few years. A new front-end design with a thin strip of horizontal lighting, along with an enlarged grille and air intakes (which also help hide the headlights) give the Sonata a lower, wider appearance. It also gives the impression of a…
For a brand that has pledged to go all-electric in the US and Canada by 2030, Buick is taking its time. The automaker has yet to launch an all-electric model in its home market, despite offering no fewer than four BEVs in China: the Velite 6 compact wagon, the Velite 7 subcompact crossover and the Ultium-based Electra E4 and Electra E5 SUVs. Rest assured, Buick EVs are coming to the US, with the first model expected to arrive in late 2024 utilizing Ultium architecture underpinnings. As with its recent China-market EVs, Buick will use the Electra name for its EV…

Nio is finally getting all-in on selling cars, making adjustments to its organizational structure, customer engagement, and sales team management to boost sales, according to local media. (Image credit: CnEVPost) A slump in deliveries left Nio (NYSE: NIO) with a weak financial performance in the second quarter and forced William Li, the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s founder, chairman, and CEO, to emphasize the urgency of increasing sales during the earnings call. Li mentioned a number of measures, including the fact that Nio is expanding its sales team in line with a 30,000-unit-per-month sales capacity, which he hopes to initially build…
