The US battery energy storage market added 5,597 megawatt hours (MWh) in the second quarter of 2023, a new quarterly record. The grid-scale segment of the industry drove the market with a record-breaking 5,109 MWh in Q2, beating the previous record in Q4 2021 by 5%, according to Wood Mackenzie and the American Clean Power Association’s (ACP) latest US Energy Storage Monitor report. The grid-scale segment achieved 172% growth quarter-over-quarter. California was No. 1 among states with the most grid-scale energy storage installations, with 738 MW and a 49% share of installed capacity. Wood Mackenzie projects the grid-scale segment to…

No other media outlet compares US auto industry trends with as much history and depth as we do in these. First, before getting into the automaker comparisons for the second quarter of 2023 versus the second quarters of 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, note that I just published our US EV sales report for Q2 2023 as well, and combining core data from that report and this one, it turns out that…

Tesla is gradually expanding its non-Tesla Supercharging pilot in North America, recently opening the first station in Alaska for CCS1-compatible electric vehicles. The site in Chugiak, near Anchorage, is now equipped with V3 Supercharging stalls with Magic Dock built-in CCS1 adapters. The company wrote that “This Supercharger is open to Tesla vehicles and Non-Tesla vehicles with CCS compatibility.” That’s one of the two Superchargers in the state, but the other one – in Soldotna – is not yet included in the non-Tesla Supercharging pilot. The non-Tesla EV users can use the Supercharger in Chugiak, simply through the Tesla app (an account…

It needed absurd amounts of fuel for its military efforts, and aboveground tanks were huge, stationary, thin-skinned targets full of flammable material. So the US military started digging underground caverns for its fuel supplies near bases where it could and using gravity to run the fuel down to the base. In 1940, the US government was looking at the winds of war and looked at…

The Tesla Model S and Model X’s estimated delivery times (for new orders) in the United States noticeably increased and are now up to a few months. Let’s recall that a few months ago, the manufacturer significantly reduced prices of the Model S and Model X by $13,500-$18,500 (15.3-18.8 percent), depending on the version. Additionally, the entry-level Model X, which starts at an MSRP of $79,990 has become qualified for the $7,500 federal tax credit. This is probably the main reason why the estimated delivery time for a new Model S (all versions) increased to October-November, while in the case…

There is no other company in recent automotive history that has recorded such rapid growth as Tesla. This brand is undoubtedly the motoring protagonist of the last 10 years. Tesla has been able to lead the global electric vehicle market by introducing attractive and competitive cars at the right time and in the right places. The company owned and led by Elon Musk has therefore become the point of reference when every motorist thinks about an electric car. But every quick success doesn’t come unbridled. There are also challenges. Here are the five main challenges that I think Tesla faces: 1. Localization Even though we theoretically live…

Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) lags in locations versus the other road-trip fast-charging standards that have been used for EVs. But it is the future.  Months ago, earlier this year, that future was not at all apparent. But May 25 the tide turned.  That day, with a joint chat between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Ford CEO Jim Farley, it was announced that Ford would adopt Tesla’s NACS connector in future EVs, starting in 2025, and that current Ford EVs would gain access to Tesla’s Supercharger network starting early 2024.  Ford Mustang Mach-E at Tesla Supercharger The timing fit…

They’ve been investing in UK facilities to usher in the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). They’ve been planning even more funding to adhere to a 2030 ban on the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and vans. As the deadline nears, however, some drivers have gotten quite vocal about their opposition to the proposed changes, and social media messaging has included numerous attacks on British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as a result. Suddenly, Sunak decided the ban would be…

Elon Musk reveals that Tesla has a ‘performance Cybertruck’ – indicating that it could be one of the first versions of the electric pickup truck. Tesla is on the verge of delivering the first Cybertruck. Despite the automaker having produced likely hundreds of trucks and being about to start deliveries, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the electric pickup truck. Tesla first unveiled the Cybertruck in 2019 and announced specs and pricing at the time, but the automaker is known to update its vehicles significantly from prototype to production. On top of it, the auto market has changed…
