The rare precious metal iridium is a key ingredient in the electrolyzer systems used to produce green hydrogen. “Rare” is the key word. The market for green hydrogen is growing, and analysts expect that electrolyzer demand will soon outstrip the supply of iridium-juiced systems. That may suit commodity speculators, at least for the time being. As for the long run, workarounds are already emerging and the US Department of Energy is on the case. Green Hydrogen Hearts Iridium… Green hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced…

Tesla and Rivian update on sales. The remains of Lordstown Motors get flipped back to a familiar face. And Volvo gives its smallest EV a very attractive price tag. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.  Volvo has confirmed that its EX30 EV will start at $36,245 for the U.S., with deliveries expected to start next summer. That makes it a rival to models like the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, and even the Chevy Bolt EV, but with a luxury badge.  Monday two U.S. EV makers provided production and delivery numbers, albeit at very different scale. Tesla…

The MG Cyberster is really a new chapter in what an MG sports car is. This review is done by ChinaDriven, which creates content about Chinese EVs on YouTube & Twitter. The MG Cyberster is actually nearly here. After what seems like years of drip feeding, it’s launch is imminent. We finally got the chance to jump behind the wheel and put it through its paces. Exciting times for EVs as manufactures start producing more exciting cars. I’ll refrain from harking on about MG’s heritage as I think it’s a disservice to the Mg Cyberster. This thoroughly modern EV roadster…

Could riders hoping to get their motorcycle license soon be able to take the exam on an electric bike? That’s the case in Belgium after a new policy goes into effect, and it could spread elsewhere. Class 3 e-bikes that can reach up to 28 mph (45 km/h) are common in the US, and they don’t require any special license to ride them. But in much of Europe, these fast electric bicycles are considered to be their own class of “speed pedelecs” and fall under limited regulation including requiring a license plate and an AM license. An AM license is…

In September, BYD set its fifth consecutive plug-in electric car sales record, further approaching a level of 300,000 units a month. According to the company’s report, last month, BYD passenger plug-in car sales amounted to 286,903 (including 13,156 Denza premium EVs), which is 43 percent more than a year ago. The overwhelming majority of BYD sales are in China, while exports stand for several percent of the total result. It’s worth paying close attention not only to the consistently increasing volume but also to the growth rate, which is decreasing quite consistently. The scale is probably too big to continue the…

We get a rare look at a Tesla Cybertruck launching from a standstill, and it looks more like a rocket than a pickup truck. Electric vehicles, in general – and Tesla vehicles, in particular – tend to have a quick acceleration. That’s thanks to the electric motors, which can provide their maximum RPM in a fraction of a second. Also, it’s a factor that comes with automakers trying to achieve longer ranges with bigger batteries that have more energy capacity but also more power capacity to send to those electric motors. It can result in surprising amounts of speed from…

A new study highlighted the disparity between the ownership costs of premium electric vehicles and their gas counterparts, versus the ownership costs of mass-market EVs and equivalent gas cars. The data is part of JD Power’s E-Vision Intelligence Report, and it highlights one of the major challenges facing the EV industry: Price parity with gas cars. The average five-year cost of ownership of a premium EV is $287 more than comparable ICE vehicles. Mass market EVs, on the other hand, cost $9,529 or 18 percent more than their ICE counterparts over five years of ownership. The average premium EV buyer…

Jay Leno has posted a special video on his Jay Leno’s Garage channel in which he gets to drive the Tesla Semi Class 8 electric truck, something he had been wanting to do for a long time. His wish came true thanks to Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen and Tesla’s Senior Manager of Semi-Truck Engineering Dan Priestley, who both briefed Jay about the electric truck before letting him drive it. As you can imagine, the 42-minute long video is a good watch and a great source to learn interesting stuff about the Tesla Semi. For example, von Holzhausen says…
