The Volvo EX90 has a maximum EPA rating of 310 miles. That’s with 21-inch wheels. In the first real-world highway range test, the flagship Swedish EV didn’t come close to its official rating. The Volvo EX90 is a 5,400-pound all-electric luxury SUV that’s very comfortable and quiet. It also has a maximum EPA range rating of 310 miles and can DC fast charge at up to 250 kilowatts, so it should be a good road-tripping machine. But as is sometimes the case with cars, not just EVs, the rated range and fuel consumption can be tough to match in the…

The risk of contamination of soil and water from EV batteries is huge, if improperly disposed at the end of their lifespan. Batteries not only contain rare earth materials, but also have “forever chemicals” in their cathode and the electrolyte. Researchers at the UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering are designing a battery that doesn’t use these harmful chemicals in the first place. The global demand for lithium-ion batteries is forecast to increase from 700 gigawatt-hours in 2022 to a whopping 4.7 terawatt-hours by 2030, according to Mckinsey & Company. That’s because battery usage is not just growing in electric vehicles,…
This white Hyundai IONIQ 5 is single-handedly rewriting the rules on EV longevity by driving over 360,000 miles on its original battery. What’s even wilder? The battery still had 87% battery health, despite the owner exclusively using DC fast charging to charge the car to 100%. That was more than 50,000 miles ago, and the car is still going strong! Take a good look at that digital dashboard display up there, and you might notice the Hyundai IONIQ 5’s odometer is sitting pretty at 666,255 km. That’s over 413,990 miles, and the South Korean EV is, reportedly, still racking up…
Are plug-in hybrids an on-ramp to fully electric vehicles, or undue cost and complexity? Are they something consumers asked for, or something created by bureaucrats and regulators? At least in some respects the answer includes all of the above. It’s complicated. Plug-in hybrids’ greater complexity is intended to pay off by greening the ownership experience for a specific kind of driver—those who can plug in most days for the commute but need a gas tank because of road-trip charging concerns. Thus, PHEVs have an engine and, typically, a much larger battery than hybrids. If you don’t charge a plug-in hybrid,…

Smart’s biggest EV has two huge screens and an impressive charging rate. Dubbed the Smart #5, it’s a mid-size crossover. It can charge at up to 400 kW and offers vehicle-to-load. This is the new Smart #5. No, it’s not the fifth model in the Chinese automaker’s portfolio, which makes things rather confusing. But it is the largest, so there’s that. Smart has come a long way from the good old days of the tiny ForTwo city hatchback. Now, the company is a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, and it only makes EVs. Enter the #5, a mid-size crossover…
