Tesla delivered 462,890 vehicles in the third quarter, higher than BYD‘s BEV sales of 443,426, though the latter’s hybrid models are growing strongly.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) continued to outpace BYD’s (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales globally in the third quarter.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker delivered 462,890 units in the third quarter, below market estimates of 463,897, according to data released today.

That’s up 6.4 percent from 435,059 in the same period last year and up 4.26 percent from 443,956 in the second quarter.

It delivered 439,975 Model 3s and Model Ys in the third quarter, above market estimates of 435,920.

Tesla’s global deliveries last quarter were higher than BYD’s BEV sales for the third consecutive quarter, but the latter’s hybrid models are growing strongly.

BYD outsold Tesla in BEV sales for the first and only time so far in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Tesla only makes BEVs, while BYD makes both BEVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

BYD sold a record 419,426 NEVs in September, its fourth consecutive record month, according to figures it released yesterday.

In the third quarter, BYD sold a record 1,134,892 NEVs, marking the first time the company’s sales topped 1 million units in a single quarter.

BYD’s passenger BEVs sold 443,426 units in the third quarter, up 2.74 percent year-on-year and up 4.08 percent from the second quarter.

Its passenger PHEVs sold 685,830 units in the third quarter, up 75.63 percent year-on-year and 23.19 percent from the second quarter.

Tesla produced 469,796 vehicles in the third quarter, including 443,668 Model 3s and Model Ys, and 26,128 other models.

The US EV maker’s retail sales figures for China in September are not yet available, which are usually released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) at the beginning of each month.

China is currently in the midst of the National Day holiday — October 1-7.

Tesla delivered 46,227 vehicles in July and 63,456 vehicles in August in China, according to previously published figures.
