“I strongly believe that the demand for ADAS will surge in the next five years, and Xpeng will be the preferred smart EV brand for consumers,” said Xpeng CEO.

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) announced a new batch of cities where its XNGP Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is available, as local car companies compete for the position as the leader in smart driving.

Xpeng today announced that it has rolled out XNGP to customers in 27 cities, including Tianjin, Chengdu, Xi’an, Wuhan and Changsha, bringing the feature to all Xpeng Max trim customers in 52 cities.

By early 2024, XNGP will be available in a total of 200 cities in China, the company said in a statement.

Xpeng has become the first automaker to offer ADAS coverage on this scale nationwide, highlighting a major milestone in the company’s technology roadmap to drive mass adoption of autonomous driving, it said.

“The inflection point of ADAS technology will come with the achievement of nationwide coverage with low cost, a high level of safety and great customer experience,” said He Xiaopeng, Xpeng’s chairman and CEO, adding, “I strongly believe that the demand for ADAS will surge in the next five years, and Xpeng will be the preferred smart EV brand for consumers.”

Xpeng’s latest OTA update also makes enhancements to a number of ADAS features to bring owners a safer, smoother and more comfortable smart driving experience, the company said.

XNGP is optimized to adapt to different cities’ driving scenarios, Xpeng said.

XNGP is a full-scenario ADAS, which Xpeng aims to make available to provide driver assistance in all driving scenes, including highways, city roads, intra-park roads, and parking lots.

Initially available only on highways, then called Highway NGP, Xpeng gradually expanded its coverage to urban areas, also known as City NGP, with the first five cities covered being Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Shanghai and Beijing.

Xpeng said at its annual 1024 Tech Day event on October 24 that it plans to roll out the XNGP feature in 20 cities not covered by HD maps by the end of November, with coverage expanding to 50 cities by the end of the year.

By the end of 2024, XNGP will be available on all roads in China’s major cities, and the NGP feature will then be available in Europe, Xpeng said at the time.

On December 14, Xpeng began public testing of XNGP in an additional 27 cities, bringing the feature’s initial coverage to 52.

Yesterday, Nio (NYSE: NIO) announced that its NOP+ (Navigate on Pilot Plus) ADAS had reached 319,821 city kilometers of coverage in China, ahead of the company’s increased target of 250,000 kilometers announced 15 days ago.

These additional kilometers expand the number of cities available for NOP+ to 208, according to Ren Shaoqing, Nio’s vice president of intelligent driving research and development.

It’s worth noting that Xpeng and Nio have taken different approaches to expanding the coverage of their ADAS capabilities, with Nio primarily completing road verification based on mileage rather than cities.

Nio’s NOP+ completes coverage of 320,000 km urban mileage, exceeding year-end target
